The Gratitude Revolution

We believe in the power of gratitude to change the world. Whaatt?! You do, too? You're definitely in the right place. Read on, friends!

Here at Thank You Notes, we know that finding the time for the important stuff is on the best days barely feasible and on most days, seemingly impossible.

Recently, I wrote a Thank You Note for a woman reaching out to a spiritual mentor she had lost touch with and hadn’t spoken to in years. Family, job changes, health related stuff: you get the picture. It’s a common story, and one you’re likely familiar with...

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.”
- Margaret Mead

You’ve heard this quote, right? It’s been well-worn for every purpose: from business blogs to activism sites. And like most well-loved sentiments, its impact has likely lessened in your estimation over time. But really, folks: #thisquotethough.

We do it with the food we eat and the news we consume:we take in what’s easily available without considering the long-term impact of those convenient choices. And it’s not that the stories we get from legitimate sources are untrue... it’s just that they aren’t necessarily useful.

“… grace can be the experience of a second wind, when even though want you want is clarity and resolution, what you get is stamina and poignancy and the strength to hang on. Through the most ordinary things… for instance, a postcard... life is transformed.” - Anne Lamott

I’m definitely guilty of trash talking my brain in an effort to get motivated. Sometimes, the only thing that gets me through a lengthy to-do list is that “mind over matter” mentality. So I get stuff done, and that gives me a sense of accomplishment: but often, I don’t feel great during or after the process.

We're 100% Canadian. And although we're too polite to scream it, we love being Canadian! So how do we prove it? We could sing O'Canada for you? (we know it in English and French!) or maybe these important Canadian Facts will convince you of our heritage eh?

This weekend, like a lot of yogis from far and wide, I slapped on my spandex and hunkered down in Toronto at The Yoga Conference and Show: eager and excited to learn. Though my weekend was packed full of back-to-back workshops, I was especially looking forward to my first one.

When you get stuck behind someone driving the speed limit when you’re late for work (how dare they?!) When you get to work and realize you forgot (best case) or lost (worst case) your wallet. When the Thank You Notes website crashes, the e-commerce site folds, and the launch of this new company that you’ve been pouring all your love into and anxiously anticipating is delayed another week.

Christmas time is one of my favourite seasons because of all the card sending (though the twinkling lights aren’t so bad, either). I think the season is just a little more magical because of all the beautiful handwritten messages, and all the do-it-yourself card displays.

Chances are you’re like most of the world: when you write by hand, it’s on a grocery list, a to-do list, or for some equally mundane reason.
